This meeting followed ArcelorMittal's recent announcement that it plans to restructure its sites in Luxembourg.
According to the press release OGBL published on Monday, ArcelorMittal had presented the general lines of its plans very superficially that day. Many questions remain unanswered, said the union. The management of the steel manufacturer was unable to provide concrete information on dates and figures concerning new investments.
They also declared that they were unable to say how these plans for restructuring might impact the number of jobs.
Following the meeting, LCGB highlighted that the company is exposed to economic challenges, which might endanger the sites and jobs here in Luxembourg.
The syndicate therefore asked once again that a consultant should look over the organisation of the company. Such restructuring would almost certainly include a reduction of jobs.
OGBL, as well, is convinced that the individual changes which are set to take place over the next three to five years will definitely have a serious impact on the numbers.
As a result and in order to be prepared for all eventualities relating to the restructure plans, both unions demand a new tripartite agreement which includes the period after 1 July of this year.
The management of ArcelorMittal, however, is not currently open towards such an agreement, said OGBL. The latter claimed to be prepared to employ all measures necessary to reach an agreement which corresponds to the future needs of the business.
LCGB also demanded that the Dudelange site should also be integrated into a new tripartite agreement, despite no longer belonging to ArcelorMittal following the takeover by Liberty House.
