The government will meet the social partners at Senningen Caste on Wednesday. The OGBL, LCGB, and CFGP trade unions demanded ahead of this meeting that the government bring to life a so-called tripartite. As a reminder, the "tripartite" social model is based on the institutionalised trialogue between the government, employers, and trade unions. Its goal is to find agreements in important economic and social issues.
According to OGBL president Nora Back, rising unemployment obliges the government to invoke a tripartite under Luxembourg law.
The government will take stock of the labour market, national budgets, and support measures for companies during Wednesday's meeting. Even though the three trade unions have different demands, they agree that taxes should under no circumstances be raised for the lower and middle classes. On the contrary, the unions demand that purchasing power of consumers be strengthened. CFGP president Romain Wolff explained in this context that value-added taxes could be lowered.
LCGB president Patrick Dury did not shy away from violently criticising Minister of Labour Dan Kersch for allowing companies that receive state support to soften the financial blow of the coronavirus crisis to fire up to 25% of their employees.
