A major police and customs operation unfolded overnight from Wednesday to Thursday in Eschweiler, near Wiltz, where large quantities of tobacco were seized from a rented warehouse.. Eyewitnesses told RTL that a significant security presence was seen on Rue Steil, with three trucks reportedly needed to remove the contents of the warehouse.
Locals said that over the past two to three weeks, police had arrested groups of people – sometimes up to ten individuals – late at night in connection with the same location.
On Wednesday night, people were once again spotted at the site, prompting a rapid intervention. Armed and hooded officers, supported by customs agents, arrived shortly after the alert. Several individuals reportedly fled into the nearby forest as authorities approached.
According to witnesses, the warehouse had been used to pack tobacco in boxes on a large scale. The building is believed to have been rented.
Customs remained at the scene throughout Thursday and Friday. Eyewitnesses say three lorries were needed to transport all the seized materials. RTL understands that as much as 40 tonnes of tobacco may have been confiscated, although this figure had not been officially confirmed by customs as of Friday afternoon.
It remains unclear whether the warehouse itself was seized as part of the ongoing investigation.
