Winning in the South is not a guarantee to win the elections, but winning without the largest constituency is similarly challenging.

A long way from 2018

In 2018, the Pirate Party entered the Chamber for the first time in the south, with the Greens also winning one seat. The Luxembourg Socialist Workers’ Party (LSAP) and the Christian Social People’s Party (CSV) both lost one mandate, leaving them with six and seven seats, respectively.

In the south, 20 MPs were directly elected. So, three seats remained to be allocated based on the votes after the initial calculation, 5% of the Chamber’s total seats. The first one went to the Democratic Party (DP), the second to the CSV, and the third to the LSAP.

What’s interesting this time around are the veterans who no longer figure on the lists. For example, the LSAP’s Alex Bodry, who, five years ago, garnered over 10,000 personal votes. Then there are also new faces like Liz Braz and Max Leners among the socialists.

For the Greens, two heavyweights are missing: Felix Braz, who recused himself from politics due to health reasons, and Roberto Traversini due to the garden shed affair. They received 17,000 and 11,000 direct votes in 2018, respectively.

Jean-Marie Halsdorf is no longer with the CSV in the South. He received almost 10,000 votes in the last elections.

The Pirates, in 2018, received the highest proportion of list votes of all the votes they received in the South: 85%.

For the CSV, the DP, and the Greens, it was still slightly over two-thirds of their respective list votes. For the LSAP, it was just under 60% of list votes.

Last time, there were theoretically nearly 2.4 million votes to be distributed among about 103,000 voters. Over 10,000 potential voters, or 10%, did not participate.

Out of the nearly 93,000 ballots in the ballot box, 85,000 were valid. Out of nearly two million actual votes, almost 150,000 were not used, not valid, or were blank ballots placed in the urn.
