Many are experiencing staff shortages, and quite unintentionally so. The result is that customers once again find themselves in front of closed doors, as was the case in a café in Esch-sur-Alzette.

Saro Pica roasts his own coffee and also serves it in his lounge and on a terrace. There is often a long queue, especially in the morning and around midday, as customers are eager to get their daily dose of coffee. Pica has thus decided to hire four people to help him, three of whom make and serve the coffee.

According to Pica, the strict minimum to run the café is two workers. Ideally, there are three people around, as this allows them to effortlessly switch between different tasks, he explains.

But last week, one of his staff members tested positive for Covid-19. Most of his other employees also developed symptoms, prompting him to temporarily close his doors on Sunday. As it later turned out, “80%" of his employees have indeed been infected with Covid-19 and are now in isolation.

Thanks to a message posted on social media, Pica managed to find some last-minute substitute workers. Specifically, Bob Rossi, a former student who had already worked at the café a few years ago, responded spontaneously to Pica’s post, allowing the café to reopen on Monday.

Other young people have also volunteered to give a helping hand, continue the activity, and serve the coffee so desired by Pica’s customers.

The report in Luxembourgish by RTL Télé:
