On Tuesday afternoon, MPs adopted two amendments to the Rules of Procedure of the Chamber of Deputies. One of these amendments pertains to a reduction in speaking time during plenary sessions, while the other addresses the live broadcasting of parliamentary committee meetings via the Chamber of Deputies’ website.
In discussing the rationale behind these changes, Wiseler emphasised the importance of concise communication within the Parliament, highlighting that prolonged discussions can impede effective communication both within and outside the legislative body. The aim is to enhance clarity and efficiency in parliamentary debates, thereby ensuring better understanding among stakeholders. These changes are slated to take effect after the upcoming holidays, starting from mid-April.
Under the new framework, speaking times during standard plenary sessions will be halved. Concurrently, parliamentary committee meetings, which were previously conducted behind closed doors, will now be accessible to the public through live broadcasts on the Chamber of Deputies’ website.
The latter initiative will undergo a trial phase initially, involving the live streaming of meetings from five select committees: Agriculture, Housing, Environment, Education, and Media.
Wiseler elaborated on these developments during his presentation at the Foyer européen on Monday evening, where he addressed the role of national parliaments in European affairs at the invitation of the “Deutscher Verein in Luxemburg” and the Bureau of the European Parliament.
