This year's summer is supposed to provide more opportunities for bike rides around the country.

The administration had thus come up with the idea of closing a few roads for car traffic in August, so that they could be used as additional bike routes.

The concerned municipalities had until Monday to decide whether or not to implement the plan.

The idea has drawn some unexpected enthusiasm from regions that were not included in the government's plans, with municipalities volunteering to join the initiative.

Minister of Transport François Bausch welcomed this move, although he regrets that others have backed down in the meantime, like for instance the Mullerthal area. Seven of the planned switches had to be cancelled at this point.

"I think it's unfortunate, the bike routes could have helped draw tourists to the region. But the last word in the matter lies with local administrations, they have to decide what's best. Nonetheless, we will have an overview of all switches by the end of the week", explained Bausch.

At this point, adaptations can be confirmed on the CR101 between Schoenfels and Kopstal, and on the CR132 between Syren and Moutfort. Bausch commented on the growing tendency in Luxembourg to resort to the bike:

"We want to provide people with the opportunity to cycle around the country with their families in a stress-free manner. The roads are quieter in August anyways, so we want to take advantage of the situation. However, considering long-term adaptations, we need to be able to provide sustainable solutions and infrastructure to really make cycling attractive."

The project will be presented in detail on Friday by the transport ministry.
