The recommendation was made during the trial of the 7 men accused of carrying out 88 burglaries between 2014 and 2017 throughout the Grand Duchy.
Hotels, restaurants, shops, businesses and private residences were all targeted by the burglars, resulting in an estimated 170,000 euros worth of stolen property, according to police. The prosecutor's office regarded 6 of the men as co-organisers of the robbery plans.
64 of the 88 break-ins between March 2014 and November 2017 were successful, said the prosecutor at the beginning of her speech. The main culprit was missing from proceedings due to a doctor's certificate.
The prosecutor described in great detail which of the offenders took part in the different burglaries, whether successful or attempted. She requested a free trial for 3 of the offences, and a further occasion was ascribed to the 7th offender, who is receiving a separate trial. That left 84 offences, with the ringleader taking part in 79 of these.
The 5 remaining burglars were accused of 59, 36, 18, 10 and 1 offences respectively, with the latter accused of taking part in a hotel burglary in March 2014, which meant he was considered part of the criminal association. 4 of the 6 men only admitted they were involved in 4 to 20 of the burglaries.
The group of offenders had known each other for a long time, and their methods were the same for each burglary, although it was unclear if there was a hierarchy involved. As far as the prosecutor was concerned, the 84 or 88 offences were merely the tip of the iceberg. She said to the 5 men that due to the enormous damage caused, and the incontestable evidence against them, they were considered to be experienced criminals. Alongside the requested prison sentences, the authorities will also confiscate 3 cars and money from the offenders.
The verdict will take place on 12 July.
