According to an official statement, the councils of several towns have declared an orange alert, as drinking water is becoming increasingly scarce.

The statement points out that the water supply to the playground at the Heringer Millen mill in the Müllerthal region will be cut off until the restrictions imposed by the municipality of Waldbillig are lifted. The municipality of Bertrange has announced similar measures, and other municipalities have followed suit.

To prevent a potential water shortage and ensure the continued supply of drinking water, new restrictions come into force with immediate effect in order to preserve water reserves. More generally, during dry spells, residents are strongly encouraged to monitor their water consumption without waiting for the authorities to impose formal restrictions.

Until further notice, individuals are prohibited from:

  • washing their cars;
  • cleaning pavements, garages, courtyards or building façades with a hose;
  • filling or topping up the water in private swimming pools, paddling pools and private ponds;
  • using jet cleaners or other high-pressure cleaners;
  • running fountains, unless they use a closed water circuit;
  • cooling food and drinks under running water;
  • watering green spaces, parks, cemeteries and sports fields, with the exception of newly planted areas.

Any breach of these rules carries a fine of between €25 and €250, the municipality states.
