The five-and-a-half year old German Shepherd Esco passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday following a brief illness, according to a post on the Grand Ducal police Facebook page.
Esco specialised in detecting explosives and was actively deployed as a search dog for the police. Officers thanked the dog for his loyal service and emphasised the importance of the canine unit and their four-legged colleagues within the Luxembourg police force.
The canine unit not only supports patrols and checks but also helps with active investigations and can be deployed for protests or larger operations.
