The roads and bridges authority has announced that the road will remain closed until 27 March 2020. Detours will go via the A1 motorway.
Images reveal that there could be a further risk of landslides, which has led the authorities to close the important thoroughfare between Wasserbillig and the entrance ramp to the A1 out of safety reasons. Friday's incident thankfully occurred without any vehicles being hit by the landslide.
This was not the first time that a landslide happened at this spot, with a prior landslide taking place in June 2018. The authorities know the cause of the problem, which is effectively increasing amounts of heavy rainfall over the past few years.
Short periods of heavy rainfall increase the risk of landslides such as the one on Friday. The authorities plan to reopen the road as quickly as possible, but also need to take long-term measures to prevent further landslides. Last year, a study was commissioned to precede further works. Once the study is complete, the roads and bridges authority will commission a project and a recommendation for construction works to stabilise the cliff. As for how to stabilise the cliff in the long-term, this will depend on the results of the actual study. Whatever stabilising work takes place, it is likely to have an impact on traffic surrounding Wasserbillig.
