Renovation and additional expansion works are planned at Schrassig prison, with the aim of improving living and working conditions at the facility.
The prison's infrastructures are to be modernised, and conditions for both inmates and staff are expected to see significant improvements. This was emphasised by Justice Minister Elisabeth Margue and Public Works Minister Yuriko Backes during a visit to the prison on Friday. In particular, the situation of women incarcerated at Schrassig is to be addressed, which is why a restructuring of Bloc F is planned.
As part of the broader renovation project, additional expansions, modernisation of infrastructures, and better spaces for vocational training, work, and social activities are also planned. The goal is to strengthen the resocialisation of prisoners and reduce recidivism.
Currently, 392 people are incarcerated at Schrassig prison: 352 men and 40 women.
