The EU has selected eight sites for supercomputing centres across the EU to host the first European supercomputers. Luxembourg is one of them.

The Grand Duchy submitted a "High Performance Computer" (HPC) project that was jointly conceived by the Ministry of the Economy and LuxConnect. The EU had launched a call for proposals in order to select the hosting sites for petascale supercomputers.

Luxembourg is one of eight places to host a world-class supercomputer - and obtain co-financing from the EU to bring to life its own HPC. The computer will be part of the European network of supercomputers.
The Grand Duchy's supercomputer will primarily focus on Luxembourg's economy and the various needs of the country's companies and other economic actors. Apart from supporting the development of major applications in domains such as personalised medicine, research and eHealth projects, it will also help small and medium sized enterprises as well as startups.

Getting one of the supercomputers to Luxembourg was one of the priority measures outlined in the Rifkin strategy.

Luxembourg's supercomputer will be installed in Bissen and operational as of 2020. It will have a power of 10 petaflops / second, which corresponds to 10,000,000,000,000,000 calculation operations per second.

The other sites that were selected to host the seven remaining supercomputers are Sofia (Bulgaria), Ostrava (Czech Republic), Kajaani (Finland), Bologna (Italy), Minho (Portugal), Maribor (Slovenia), and Barcelona (Spain).
