Over the past several days, a number of municipalities have notified residents that military exercises involving the Luxembourg Army would be taking place in their areas.

These drills, which occur in public spaces, are always announced in advance to local authorities to minimise disruption to the community and inform civilians, as soldiers often interact with members of the public or, as was the case on Wednesday morning, move through villages during manoeuvres.

Military vehicles support the operation

The exercise, observed on Wednesday morning near Bettendorf, included six Command Liaison and Reconnaissance Vehicles (CLRV). According to the Army’s press service, the focus of this training was placed on observation, infiltration, tactical movement, and securing positions.

The importance of such exercises was highlighted by a Corporal First Class in an interview with RTL. He explained that these drills are vital for testing personnel and equipment, while also improving cooperation within the unit.

As part of the exercise, two soldiers were tasked with advancing towards the bridge in Bettendorf, with a specific objective in mind. Additional footage and details about this segment of the training can be found in the accompanying video.

Soldiers left in the dark about upcoming challenges

One core aspect of these exercises is that participants do not know in advance what challenges they will face.

During the operation, one team monitored an objective from a concealed observation post, while others hid their vehicles in the forest and awaited further instructions. Simultaneously, a separate team played the role of the opposing force.

After the exercise concludes, the training is thoroughly reviewed and analysed. The aim, as emphasised by the Army, is to learn from any mistakes so they can be avoided in live situations.
