A petition calling for urgent improvements to the overcrowded Metz–Thionville–Luxembourg rail line has passed the 5,500-signature threshold required for a public debate.

The petition has so far gathered around 5,770 signatures, with three days still remaining.

The petitioner is calling for urgent improvements to conditions on the route, particularly through increased rail capacity, as trains are regularly overcrowded and passengers also face delays and cancellations.

The petition calls for more seats to be made available quickly, stronger cooperation between the French and Luxembourg rail operators, and faster investment in cross-border rail infrastructure.

It also argues that the route has become strategically important for Luxembourg's economy, with tens of thousands of cross-border workers using it every day, and warns that inadequate rail capacity could push more commuters towards private cars.
