
FIRES OVERNIGHT – The CGDIS reports a string of fires across Luxembourg last night. Alongside a vegetation fire, bins and a car also went up in flames. No injuries have been reported, only material damage.
GRAVES VANDALISM – Around 110 graves were damaged at Hollerich cemetery in late June. Police have confirmed the vandalism to RTL. In some cases statues were knocked down, in others lettering. The City of Luxembourg has contacted the affected families and filed a complaint. No suspect has yet been identified.
SPACE CAMPUS – The Chamber has passed legislation for the state to fund the lease and operation of a Space Campus test centre, at a total cost of around €196 million. Rapporteur André Bauler says the project should boost innovation and make Luxembourg an even more attractive hub for the space industry.
BRUSSELS BUILDING FIRE – The death toll from yesterday's building fire in central Brussels has risen to six. Three lifts fell after fire broke out at the site, where renovation work was under way. A search is continuing for further victims. It's not yet known how the accident happened.
FRANCE ASSISTED DYING – A long running political process comes to an end in France today, with a fourth and final vote on assisted dying legislation. The law will allow assisted dying under certain conditions. It's regarded as one of the major social reforms of President Macron's time in office.
IRAN WAR – President Trump is stepping up pressure on Iran. He says power plants and bridges will be destroyed next week if Tehran doesn't return to the negotiating table. There were heavy strikes overnight, and the US has blockaded Iranian ports. Trump says further large-scale attacks are planned in the coming days, and will continue until he says it's enough. Peace talks between Iran and the US remain stalled after the ceasefire was repeatedly broken.
SPAIN GIBRALTAR BORDER – A border more than a century old, between the British enclave of Gibraltar and Spain, becomes history today. An agreement signed in Brussels yesterday removes border checks for travellers from the Schengen area. It will be welcomed above all by workers: around 15,000 people cross daily from Spain to work in Gibraltar.
FOOTBALL – Spain are the first World Cup finalists, after a clear 2-0 win over France yesterday. The second finalist is decided tonight at 9pm, when England play Argentina.
Staying with football and UNA Strassen are through to the next round of Conference League qualifying, after a 2-0 win over La Fiorita of San Marino. They'll face Partizan Belgrade, with matches on 23 and 30 July.
And in Champions League qualifying, Atert Bissen play their return leg against Klaksvik of the Faroe Islands tonight at 8pm. Luxembourg lost the first leg 2-1.
CYCLING – Stage 11 of the Tour de France is under way, a flat 162 kilometre run from Vichy to Nevers. Overall, Tadej Pogacar leads Jonas Vingegaard by 3 minutes 36 seconds.
