The data show that housing prices in Luxembourg came just short of doubling between 2007 and the first quarter of this year, increasing by 91.4%.

The EU-27 average, meanwhile, was an increase of just 21.5% - meaning that Luxembourg's price increase was over four times that of the EU average.

What can also be seen in the data is that house prices in the EU as a whole actually decreased between 2007 and 2015, when the prices again began to rise, with 2016 prices higher on average than those seen in 2007. This trend was not seen in Luxembourg, where prices continuously increased throughout the financial crisis - though at a slower pace.

Luxembourg is not alone in seeing a steep increase in prices between 2007 and 2020, however - housing prices in Austria went up by 91.3%, followed by Sweden at 82.8%.

On the other end of the spectrum is Greece, which saw housing prices decrease by -35.6%, Romania (-23.6%), and Ireland (-17.5%).

Rent meanwhile has not increased as sharply in Luxembourg, increasing by just over 20% in the same period, which is roughly in line with the EU average. Here the sharpest increases were seen in Lithuania (+101.8%), Czechia (+82.2%), and Hungary (+75.1%). Only one country, Greece, saw rental prices going down, by -17.5%.
