Robert Cloos, known to friends and colleagues as "Rubesch", passed away on 10 September. Although he was not a public figure in the conventional sense, the outpouring of grief on social media has laid bare just how prominent a place he held in Luxembourgish civil society.
He grew up in Limpertsberg, where he also went to secondary school. Following a brief stint at the University of Liège, he returned to Luxembourg and went on to work for the Post until his death. Well-liked by customers and colleagues alike, he was known for his helpfulness and his kindness, particularly in more recent years behind the counter at the Hesperange post office.
Throughout his life, Cloos was deeply involved in community life, whether with the Scouts, with his culinary club, the "Zerwéiten", or with the MASKéNADA artist collective. He lent a hand to numerous theatre, dance and music productions, taking on everything from set design and organisation to ticketing.
In 2012, he co-organised the well-known "Bopebistro" tour by Serge Tonnar & Legotrip. His cooking, enjoyed by everyone lucky enough to sit at his table, was a way of bringing family and friends together over a good meal.
All agree that Rubesch was one of a kind, and one who will be remembered for a long time to come.
