Grand ducal and national anthemsLuxembourg Military Band plays Wilhelmus and Ons Heemecht

RTL Today
Celebrations for this year's National Day were cancelled or considerably modified due to the ongoing pandemic. Luxembourg's Military Band nevertheless came up with a inegnious idea to keep the musical aspect of National Day alive.
De Wilhelmus
Gespillt vun der Militärmusek, gefilmt op separate Plazen uechter dat ganzt Land.

Rather than playing the Wilhelmus (the grand ducal anthem) and  Ons Heemecht (the national anthem) in a concert hall, Luxembourg's Military Band decided to play parts of the iconic songs in various locations across the country. The individual parts were then put together in a video montage that viewers can enjoy from the safe confines of their homes.

Lieutenant colonel and Military Band conductor Jean-Claude Braun came up with the ingenious idea of playing the national and grand ducal anthems in 15 locations that symbolically represent an important cultural or historical aspect of Luxembourg's national identity.

The Military Band consequently recorded parts of the Wilhelmus and Ons Heemecht at Vianden Castle, in the scenic Mullerthal and in front of the Grand Ducal Palace to name but a few of the locations. Sergeant Ben Seil took care of the montage of the separate sections of film into a composite whole.

You will be able to see the result on the RTL websites:

Monday 5pm: The Wilhelmus
Tuesday 8am: Ons Heemecht

The Military Band will also host an official ceremony at the Kanounenhiwwel in Luxembourg City on Tuesday morning at 11am.
