
In his response, he conceded that "the proportion of GPs compared to specialist doctors" is much smaller in Luxembourg than in the surrounding area. The ratio in Luxembourg is 30% general practitioners for every 70% of specialist doctors.
In comparison, 37% of Wallonia's doctors are GPs alongside 48% in Lorraine.
In his parliamentary question, Bauler highlighted that the tendency could become more of an acute issue as fewer Luxembourgish medical students are returning to the Grand Duchy to become doctors. Schneider claimed the ministry aims to address this issue with two measures: first, the Ministry of Health will improve communications in terms of Luxembourg's doctor needs and second of all, the ministry will work towards a financial incentive for medical graduates to return to the Grand Duchy.
He further confirmed that the ministry is currently working on a study to address the issue. In the meantime, however, the country will have to make do with the 500 GPs already practising in Luxembourg, as follows 2017 statistics.
