As Luxembourg gears up for National Day celebrations, emergency services have ramped up their presence in the capital in light of both the anticipated large crowds and a red heatwave warning affecting the entire country.
The Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps (CGDIS) announced the deployment of 140 firefighters in Luxembourg City on Monday.
They were backed by two advanced medical posts, eight ambulances, nineteen mobile foot patrols, and two motorcycle teams. This robust deployment was intended to ensure a swift response to any emergencies during the festivities.
Despite thousands of people gathering in the city centre, the CGDIS confirmed that the night proceeded without any major incidents.
Firefighters provided assistance to 93 individuals, with 15 requiring transport to an on-call clinic for further medical care.
To bolster emergency coverage, volunteer firefighters were called in, and twenty-two trainee professional firefighters were reassigned from the traditional National Day parade on Tuesday morning to support the expanded emergency efforts.
An additional six trainees are set to join the midday CGDIS security operation, which is expected to attract large crowds.
For the parade, 72 firefighters, seven ambulances, and a SAMU (emergency medical support unit) will be stationed on-site, ready to address any urgent situations. The CGDIS has also cautioned that the current intense heat is predicted to persist in the coming days.
Consequently, the heightened level of emergency preparedness will remain in effect at least until the end of the week.
This response is being supported by the Luxembourg Red Cross, the army, and Luxambulance, with all operations coordinated through the CSU-112 emergency operations centre.
Their combined efforts are aimed at providing timely medical assistance throughout the ongoing heatwave and National Day festivities.
