Consumer protectionLuxembourg Consumer Association demands cheaper taxi tariffs

RTL Today
The Luxembourg Consumer Association (ULC) has published a damning press release claiming one of the main goals of the 2016 taxi law has not been achieved, namely reducing taxi tariffs.

The liberalisation of taxi tariffs, as introduced in the law, was designed to keep taxi tariffs affordable, but the ULC has stated the opposite has occurred.

According to Statec figures, taxi tariffs have risen by an average of 6.6% between 2016 and 2018. Luxembourg is also known for having one of the most expensive taxi systems worldwide.

Given the increase in prices, the ULC wrote, the incentive to use taxis more and in turn reduce the risk of drink driving or driving whilst tired has not been successful. Fares for taxi rides of 10 kilometres vary between €22.50 and €45.

The ULC directly addressed Minister for Mobility and Public Works, Francois Bausch, calling on him to submit legal proposals to ensure that taxi tariffs become affordable.
