Be it an elderly woman who has her purse stolen or a senior citizen falling for a scammer pretending to be a long-lost relative or being burgled at home: In order to prevent these types of crime, senior safety advisors met with elderly people for an information meeting on Sunday afternoon in Walferdange.
The attendees living in the surrounding areas said they felt "more or less safe" on a daily basis, but this can always be improved. The security advisors leading the meeting were trained to do just that by the police.
The "urban legend" that criminals mark people's front doors or mail boxes to signal to others whether an elderly woman lives there, the household owns a dog or whether the resident lives on their own was actually confirmed as true by police officers attending the meeting.
Apart from this revelation, security advisors and police officers explained the most common scam techniques to attendees, made them aware of the dangers and told them how to best protect themselves.
