On Friday the public prosecutor’s office published a statement confirming that more drug seizures took place at the Findel Cargo Center in 2025 than in 2024. According to their report, 873,709 kilos of cocaine, 73,938 kilos of methamphetines, 2,254,701 kilos of cannabis and 107,937 kilos of hashish were confiscated last year.
In addition, customs officers seized around 150 kilos of so-called precursors, or chemical substances used in the production of synthetic drugs. However, this number had declined in comparison to previous years.
Authorities said the fight against drug trafficking not only consists of intercepting illegal substances, but also incorporates the identification of criminal networks behind the shipments, and withdrawing them from circulation, on a national and international level. Although the majority of drugs seized in Luxembourg are not intended for the Luxembourgish market, the goal remains to weaken the trafficking structures in place.
The public prosecutor’s office cites geopolitical developments, political changes in various regions and legal changes in Asia and America as reasons for the higher number of seizures. The production and supply chains have changed, causing criminal gangs to adjust their routes more frequently. In addition to large ports such as Antwerp and Rotterdam, other routes are also becoming more popular - including cargo flights via Luxembourg.
The authorities rely on systematic analysis of cargo documents by customs, targeted checks in case of suspicion, and specialised detection methods and training. The seized substances are systematically analysed and then destroyed.
