On Wednesday, various branches of the police and customs carried out coordinated checks at Luxembourg’s national airport as part of the ongoing cross-border anti-drug initiative.

A total of 27 police officers and 24 customs agents took part in the operation, during which 393 passengers, 293 pieces of luggage, and four aircraft were inspected. While no violations were detected, authorities stressed the importance of monitoring the country’s only external Schengen border as a key safeguard against drug trafficking.

The coordinated action forms part of the long-standing Hazeldonk cooperation framework, which links law enforcement authorities in Belgium, the Netherlands, France, and Luxembourg in the fight against drug trafficking. Originally established in 2006, the initiative was revived in 2023 with the introduction of a new action plan, resulting in significantly strengthened joint operations.

Hazeldonk joint controls are conducted regularly on roads, in rail traffic, and in air transport. The project takes its name from the small Dutch village of Hazeldonk, located on the Belgian border along one of the main routes used historically by Europe’s drug-smuggling networks.
