Weekly Covid reviewHospitalisations tick upwards as cases remain high

RTL Today
The weekly coronavirus review from the Ministry of Health has shown a slight rise in hospitalisations from Covid-19, as the Omicron wave continues to hit Luxembourg.

While the number of positive tests fell during the week of 24-30 January, regular hospitalisations rose from 59 to 70. The average age of coronavirus patients over the period was 48 years.

Meanwhile, the number of ICU patients dropped from 14 to 10, eight of whom were unvaccinated.

Seven people also died after contracting Covid-19 last week.

The seven-day incidence rate has remained more or less unchanged for the past two weeks at 2,350 cases per 100,000 residents. Children below the age of 14 have the highest frequency of new infections with 6,000 cases per 100,000.

Last week, 51 classes from 31 primary and nine secondary schools recorded at least five infections each.

79% of the Grand Duchy’s population is now fully vaccinated, which amounts to 475,495 people.

Even if fewer people tested positive, it remains noteworthy that the incidence rate for unvaccinated people was higher: 3,700 compared to 1,800 out of 100,000. The average age of people testing positive last week was 28 years.

36,000 people were forced into isolation last week (+21%) and more than 10,000 into quarantine (-32%).

Analyses from the country’s water purification plants also display elevated rates of coronavirus residue, which still exceed the record-breaking levels first registered in October 2020.
