Luxembourg's hospitals are compiling figures ahead of the state of emergency ending next week.

In January and February this year, the Grand Duchy's four main hospitals treated around 16,100 patients. The same number of patients were treated from March to May, with the average figures dropping by a third.

16,530 patients were treated over the three months in which the pandemic took hold, with 10 to 15 coronavirus patients per hospital in intensive care by the time the virus peaked in mid April. This took up around 45% capacity of the space reserved for Covid-19 patients.

At the peak of the pandemic, around a quarter of the "normal" beds on hospital wards were filled with coronavirus patients. As an example, the CHL saw stationary activities at its three sites drop by a third, while ambulance activity reduced by 43%.

Minister Paulette Lenert published these figures in a response to a parliamentary question. DP MPs Carole Hartmann and Gusty Graas had asked for details on the capacity within hospitals.

Lenert did not provide details on the costs of treatment. At present, hospital activity has risen again, although not yet attaining pre-coronavirus levels.
