
The residents' main purpose is calling upon politicians to finally act. Between 2004 and 2005 during the planning of the Ban de Gasperich project, the authorities also envisioned a new route linking Howald and Alzingen. In the years since, nothing has happened — to the dismay of residents, who actively want a bypass to be constructed.
Hesperange's mayor Marc Lies said he had a distinct memory of a meeting in Roeser back in 2017. At the meeting, the national authorities presented five variations and discussed a public consultation. One and a half years later, Lies and the municipality are still waiting for that consultation.
A study has revealed that between 11,000 and 17,000 vehicles take the Gasperich route each day, causing the highest nitrogen dioxide levels in the country.
The issue is not simply limited to the main roads going through Hesperange and Alzingen, as residential areas in Itzig and Fentange also feel the brunt of the mass commuting. Consequently, citizens and local politicians have called upon the government to act to relieve the congestion on this route.
