Luxembourg ProjectHelping refugees in Athens prepare for their professional futures

RTL Today
On Wednesday the Luxembourg project was officially inaugurated in Athens, in the presence of Minister of Foreign Affairs Jean Asselborn, and the Greek migration minister.

The association named "Ankaa" was founded in 2017 by 5 Luxembourgers, with the goal of helping refugees in Athens prepare for their professional future.

Students can gain skills in a number of workshops covering subjects from electricity to cooking.

Greece, along with Italy, receives the highest number of asylum seekers in Europe. Around 66,000 people arrive in Greece each year after being forced to flee their home countries.

In Athens alone, around 13,000 people seek to integrate in a society which has been particularly fragile since the financial crisis. The government has asked other EU member states to accommodate a number of their refugees to help ease the impact on Greek society.

Jean Asselborn said he understood Greek migration minister Dimitris Vitsas' concerns, acknowledging that Greece is hit hard with every new wave of refugees. However, according to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the problems lie with the Dublin regulation, which requires reform.
