No further deliveries plannedHealth authorities had to discard 13,100 AstraZeneca doses

On 30 November, 130 boxes of the vaccine reached their expiration date, meaning that around 13,100 doses of Vaxzevria were taken out of the national stock and disposed of.

According to the National Health Directorate, the vaccine has “fallen out of favour with the public”. Deliveries of the product have been suspended since September.

In her reply to a parliamentary question by Pirate Party MP Sven Clement, Minister of Health Paulette Lenert specified that the decision was taken in part because the producer did not provide data on the vaccine’s quality post-expiration date.

For this reason, authorities were also unable to donate the doses.

The Pirate Party expressed its outrage over the fact that vaccines had to be disposed of, pointing out that this had created an estimated cost of around €30,000.

The opposition party stressed that in 20 days’ time, on 27 December, part of the Moderna stock reaches its expiration date. The party calls on the government to present a plan to avoid more expired vaccines ending up in the bin.
