On Sunday, citizens will be tasked with choosing members of the European parliament to represent Luxembourg. Here, we've compiled five numbers that are good to know ahead of the election.

A total of six MEPs  – out of a grand total of 751 – will be representing Luxembourg in the European Parliament. It stands as one of the smallest representative groups, on par with Cyprus, Malta, and Estonia.

In total, 10 parties submitted a complete list of six candidates for the European elections of 26 May 2019. Of these 60 candidates, 32 are men and 28 are women.

The overall average age of candidates is 43.9, 40 for women and 47 for men. The age breakdown shows there are 15 candidates who are between 20 and 29 years old, 13 between 30 and 39 years old, five between 40 and 49 years old, 17 between 50 and 59 years old,seven between 60 and 69 years old, and three candidates between 70 and 79 years old.

283,683 voters are registered on electoral lists. Compared with the 2014 European elections, which saw 264,183 residents vote, there has been a net increase of 19,500 voters.

The number of registered voters varies considerably between the different municipalities in the Grand Duchy: while the smallest municipality, Saeul, only has 521 voters, Luxembourg City leads the way with 35,288 voters.

This number corresponds to the non-Luxembourgish EU nationals who are registered to vote in the European elections. The last European elections included 21,650 foreign voters, bringing the number of foreigners up by 1,525 people (+ 7%).

The percentage of registered foreign voters compared to the potential electorate (foreign EU residents aged 18 and over) is 11.8%, a slight decrease compared to 12.2% in 2014. The electoral weight, that is to say, the percentage of registered non-Luxembourg EU citizens compared to the total electorate of the Grand Duchy, remained constant at 8.2% between 2014 and 2019.

Among the registered foreign voters, the Portuguese are the most numerous (in absolute numbers) with 7,765 registered, which corresponds to 10.3% of the Portuguese resident population. The French follow with 4,301 (11,5% of the French population), after which come the Italians with 2,847 (14,8%), then Belgians with 2,466 (14,7%) and Germans with 2,149 registered (19,7%).

In order to ensure the fastest possible results, 92 government officials will be working at the Government Coordinating Office (BCG) on the election day. The majority of agents will be working at the Government IT Centre (CTIE), but BCG offices are also located in the main offices in Luxembourg City and Esch-sur-Alzette.
