Against the backdrop of an ongoing investigation into illegal immigration and corruption, five staff members of the General Department of Immigration have been dismissed.
Minister for Home Affairs Léon Gloden confirmed in an interview with RTL that he was first made aware of the case in April 2025. According to the minister, the General Department of Immigration itself had reportedly filed initial reports with the police as early as January 2023.
Three of the five employees were let go by Minister Gloden in April 2025, following a search of the General Department of Immigration's premises. One of those three was remanded in custody.
On Tuesday, the public prosecutor's office announced that additional searches had been carried out at the Immigration Directorate, the Ministry of Higher Education, several companies, and private residences as part of a large-scale probe into illegal immigration.
In response, Minister Gloden dismissed two further staff members that same day.
The public prosecutor's office confirmed that an investigation has been underway since summer 2023 into suspected corruption, influence peddling, money laundering, forgery, subsidy fraud, migrant smuggling, and violations of the law on the free movement of persons and immigration.
Authorities estimate that approximately 200 third-country nationals may have entered Luxembourg illegally using forged documents and subsequently claimed social benefits.
