New Year's greetingsFewer text and MMS messages at midnight, but mobile data up

RTL Today
Wishing friends and family a happy new year via text message or MMS message is becoming increasingly unpopular with Tango and Post clients.

It seems that Luxembourg is no longer "ringing" in the new year the old fashioned way.

This year, about 1.3 million text messages were sent via the Post service provider, 13% fewer than the year before.

About 39,000 MMS (for transmitting graphics, videos and audio files) were sent mark the beginning of the new year, 8,500 fewer than in the beginning of 2018.

Mobile data usage on the other hand was up by about 24% in comparison to last year.

The service provider Tango registered a similar trend. Mobile data was up by 8%. A lot of this is a result of data roaming: Traffic from abroad made up about 24%, while the percentage was only at 18% in 2018.

Text messages were down by about 7% between midnight and 1am. The trend started back in 2014 and it has since established itself.

Phone calls were also down by 8% in comparison to last year.

WhatsApp, Facebook, Snapchat were the big winners of 2018 and more and more people are sending out video messages to convey their New Year's greetings.
