A woman and her dog had a lucky escape on Saturday afternoon after their car veered off the road and plunged into the Sauer river at a campsite in Bollendorf, just across the border on the German side. The accident occurred after the woman reportedly made a driving error, causing her vehicle to leave the road and end up in the water. Both the driver and her dog managed to save themselves and swim to shore without injury.
Nearby residents and campers quickly responded to the scene and assisted in recovering the car, which had already been partly swept away by the current. Using ropes, specialised equipment, and a tractor, they were able to pull the vehicle out of the river.
Police from Bitburg, firefighters from Bollendorf and Ferschweiler, as well as an emergency team from Luxembourg, were all involved in the operation.
