At around 1.50am on Saturday, a police patrol travelling on the A4 from Luxembourg City towards Esch-sur-Alzette was suddenly overtaken by a motorist driving at very high speed near roadworks located between the Leudelange Sud and Pontpierre exits. Police immediately set off in pursuit.

During the chase, the vehicle swerved sharply to the right and collided with the car in front of it. The latter spun out, struck the crash barrier, and came to a halt facing the opposite direction.

Under the force of the impact, the reckless driver's vehicle was thrown over the central reservation. It hit the crash barrier and came to rest on its roof approximately one hundred metres further down the motorway.

The driver managed to get out of the vehicle, climbed over the barrier, and fled on foot to the other side of the motorway. They were eventually found having taken refuge in a nearby construction site.

The driver refused to take a breathalyser test, and their driving licence was confiscated. According to initial reports, everyone involved in the accident was unharmed.

The motorway in the direction of Esch-sur-Alzette was closed for around two hours to secure the scene and carry out recovery operations.

Drink driver scrapes tunnel wall in front of police officers

At around 10pm on Friday, police officers patrolling Rue des Ateliers in Pétange towards Route de Luxembourg noticed three vehicles stopped at a red light. When the light turned green, the first vehicle took several seconds to pull away.

In the tunnel located after the traffic lights, the motorist scraped the wall with their left wing mirror. The driver appeared to have difficulty staying in their lane, occasionally drifting into the oncoming traffic lane.

Officers intercepted the motorist and observed that they were in a state of advanced intoxication. The driver's licence was revoked.

At the police station, the driver became increasingly disrespectful towards the officers. Given that the individual presented a danger to themselves and others, the police decided to detain them in custody overnight.
