On the morning of 16 October, construction workers made an unusual discovery. When they hit a rotten wooden door in the Rue des Champs in Bertrange, they were greeted by a bag filled with three skulls among other remains.
Since then, an investigation has been ongoing to find out who the bones belong to.

The prosecutor’s office was able to exclude a violent crime relatively quickly. According to first analyses, the bones are not recent.
In Bertrange one of the possible tracks leads us back to bones that were taken from a graveyard in the 70s or 80s. Around that time, the graveyard was being renovated, giving some people the opportunity to slip some bones into their pockets.
The municipality’s budget plan for 1912 included 13,000 francs to be invested into a new graveyard. Since the latter was located further outside of Bertrange, a hearse was purchased on 26 October 1925 for a price of 6,210 francs.
The old cemetery was located in the immediate vicinity of the church In Bertange. In 1932, the graves were removed to expand the street. The new cemetery was renovated once more at the beginning of the 1970s, when they also added a morgue.

Thus it is possible that the bones were stolen or taken away during these construction periods.
The prosecutor’s office confirmed that the examining magistrate has taken these statements into account, therefore the bones must have originated from an old cemetery nearby.
Furthermore, the spokesperson added that no possible investigative tracks will be excluded at the moment.
Since the results from the National Health Laboratory (LNS) are not in yet, the enquiry is still ongoing.
