Government revenue amounted close to €22 billion as of 31 December 2021, a 16% increase compared to the previous year.

Minister of Finance Yuriko Backes addressed two of the Chamber’s commissions on Monday and explained that there is a way out of the crisis, but that “trust” is needed.

Government spending was €21 billion, but more could be added up until April this year.

This means there is a budget surplus of €840 million, an amount that could still change in the coming months. Officials initially expected a deficit of some €1 billion.

The debt ceiling thus stays below 29% of GDP.

In 2020, government spent €2 billion on Covid aid packages, with that amount decreasing last year to €680 million.
