The purpose behind the call for applications was to encourage new retailers to find a base in the city centre known for having been blighted by the difficulties of the market and a number of construction sites over the past few months. The authorities offered competitive and affordable rental prices (starting at €650) for two sites located on one of the most prestigious streets in the capital, namely Rue Philippe II.
The City of Luxembourg launched its call for applications a month ago and has been surprised by the amount of responses. The first alderman Serge Wilmes (CSV), who is responsible for all things commerce in the municipality, confirmed that 39 applications were submitted, far more than the authorities expected.
It appears the businesses that applied are varied in focus, ranging from sectors such as fashion, home furnishings, photography, technology to accessories. In processing the applications, the City of Luxembourg will focus on two criteria, namely how unique and new the proposed retailer is and how it would complement existing businesses. They will also offer priority to new entrants to the market.
The first pop-up stores will set up shop in November, staying there for six months at most. The authorities will set up a waiting list for other businesses and launch a new call for applications in the spring. Wilmes added that the opportunity will allow businesses to determine whether they would like to continue their work after the pop-up shop. However, it remains to be seen whether other rents for businesses will remain attainable.
