Coronavirus and the subsequent health crisis disrupted travel plans for many people, as planes were grounded and airports shut down for commercial passengers.
With uncertainty clouding proceedings, holidaymakers feared they would be unable to recoup their expenses.
However, European legislation states that in cases of cancellation, travellers must be offered a new route or a refund, which can take the form of credit for a future trip if agreed by the consumer.
Companies who deny their customers this option are in violation of European law. In Luxembourg, the ULC issued a reminder to consumers regardingtheir rights.
Unfortunately for consumers, results vary according to airlines and countries. Spain recently announced 17 airlines would be prosecuted for denying customers the right to reimbursement. In France, on the contrary, consumer unions are still battling the intense lobby of airlines and the French state, while many travellers wait for refunds.
