The merger between the municipalities of Boulaide and Commune of Lac de la Haute-Sûre – Stauséigemeng in Luxembourgish – is now entering a decisive phase. In exactly two months, on 26 November, the two municipal councils will vote on the proposed merger and on holding a referendum.
If elected officials from both municipalities approve the proposal, residents will be consulted before the next summer holidays. This timeline marks a clear acceleration.
Both mayoral councils have already informed their respective councils of the project's intentions and outline. If the referendum results in a favourable majority in both municipalities, the 2029 municipal elections would take place as one unit, although likely still in two sections, while the new structure is being finalised.
The resulting municipality would have nearly 4,000 inhabitants and, with an area of over 80km², would become the third largest in the country. This represents a significant change in scale for the Grand Duchy, currently comprised of exactly 100 municipalities.
This momentum is part of a broader movement, as the northern municipalities of Diekirch, Ettelbruck, Erpeldange-sur-Sûre, and Schieren are also holding talks with a view to regrouping as the "Nordstad".
A referendum on the matter is expected to be held at the end of next year.
