The public prosecutor has requested a €10,000 fine for former Mudam director Enrico Lunghi, and a one-year suspended prison sentence together with a €5,000 fine for his wife, Catherine Gaeng.

The couple stand accused before the Luxembourg City District Court of handling stolen information and breaching the secrecy of a judicial investigation.

In this context, handling stolen information refers to the publication of confidential details from the 2021 investigation in Catherine Gaeng’s book Donc, nous avons menti au public. The book quoted extracts from the case file even though the judicial investigation had not yet been completed.

The prosecution described the publication as an emotional and one-sided work, arguing that it amounted to a form of “personal justice”.

The civil parties in the case are former RTL director Alain Berwick, the mother of former journalist Sophie Schram, and former RTL reporter Marc Thoma, who characterised the proceedings as a matter of principle.

The trial continues on Wednesday with the defence pleadings, in a case revolving around a controversial interview and events dating back ten years.

Meanwhile, the first trial connected to the RTL–Lunghi affair is set to continue at appeal stage in March.
