Over the course of the last few years, all Fonds du rail projects came in within or below budget. A prime example is 'Gare Pafendall, which ended up costing a third less than anticipated.
On Monday (May 13), MPs from the Budget Control Commission were presented with figures that were in the green - something that has not always been the case in the past.
The Minister for Mobility and Public Works, François Bausch, said that follow-ups on the financial situation are a lot more organised these days: the ministerial Commission, managements and CFL monitor the finances much more efficiently than they used to do some 15 or 20 years ago.
A significant factor to consider is that the projects had been planned before the financial crisis, when construction prices were higher, suggested the President of the Commission, Diane Adehm.
The CSV MP also indicated that this trend may reverse again in the future: "The Ministry has noticed that calls for tender sometimes only receive a single response" Adehm said, also adding that it could not be ruled out that prices will rise again in the future.
The same Commission also made the financial report on Fonds Belval: The original budget included €960 million, reaching €1 billion with some modifications. The DP's Eugène Berger said that they were now 'finalising it' after spending €960 million.
