Prime Minister Xavier urges people to reflect on themselves in his traditional pre-National Day speech. He thinks about future challenges, and how to ensure Luxembourg will maintain its freedom, safety, wealth and quality of life. Whilst Bettel is confident about Luxembourg’s future, he is less optimistic about that of our planet in general.

According to Bettel, we should work together with our European partners in putting pressure on those countries that are still resistant. He also looks back on Grand Duke Jean, who passed away on 2. April.

Another subject was the importance of resisting to all forms of extremism, as well as always keeping our roots in mind, as well as where we want to be in the future.

Xavier Bettel’s message on National Day 2019

Bettel would like to remind the people of the Grand Duchy that 23. June is a historic day that celebrates all that represents Luxembourg, notably its independence, and its strength as a country in the centre of Europe. We should be grateful to those who have fought for Luxembourg to be what it is today, for their courage and commitment. Our National Day, however, is also a day for reflecting on ourselves.

Technology, for instance, has had a significant impact on society, our lives, our ways of working and communicating with each other. Bettel also reflects on political and economic change. Without a doubt, numerous challenges will have to be faced in the future. Due to Luxembourg’s financial, social and economic stability, Bettel remains confident.

When it comes to our planet, however, things need to change. The various protests in the last few months are a good start to putting emphasis on the fact that climate change is very real and we need to act fast. Luxembourg is one of the countries that are actively trying to reduce harmful emissions.
