
The steel corporation refused to confirm the number given by the Minister of Labour, Employment and the Social and Solidarity Economy before both parliamentary commissions on Thursday.
According to a statement by ArcelorMittal, there will be no mass dismissal, but the jobs will "naturally" be freed up with voluntary departures or early retirement.
The sites in Differdange and Belval will not be closed, according to the group's statement. ArcelorMittal also outlined that the reduction in job roles is not a priority in the transformation project. Instead the project highlights the sites as necessary in order to maintain competitiveness.
The spokesman for all eight Luxembourg sites, Rolan Bastian, said that the corporation does not have specific redundancy plans on the agenda. Specialised candidates will be hired alongside the "natural" departures.
Despite this, CSV MP Marc Spautz has posed five precise questions regarding the ArcelorMittal situation to ministers Dan Kersch and Étienne Schneider, querying whether the group has made formal commitments in terms of future investments in Luxembourgish factories, and what exactly the ministers mean by the notion of "crisis".
