Pupils turned out in large numbers on 3 October to witness Grand Duke Guillaume's accession to the throne.

In response to a parliamentary question from MP Ben Polidori from the Luxembourg Socialist Workers' Party (LSAP), Education Minister Claude Meisch confirmed that the event generated strong enthusiasm among students.

As the ceremony took place on a school day, the handover of power between Grand Duke Henri and his son Guillaume was accompanied by a special exemption: pupils wishing to attend were allowed to request a day off from classes.

According to the minister, 885 exemptions were granted to pupils in primary education, while the vast majority came from secondary schools, where 18,773 students were excused from lessons to attend the ceremonies.
