Luxembourg police intensified alcohol checks over the weekend, stopping 135 drivers and uncovering multiple cases of drink driving and other offenses.
Police carried out a series of alcohol checks across the country on Saturday night, starting in Hesperange on the CR159 between 10.30 and 11.30pm. The operation then moved to Boulevard du Général George S. Patton between 12.30 and 1.30am, before concluding on Rue Auguste Laval from 3 to 4am on Sunday morning.
In total, 135 drivers were given breathalyzer tests, even if they showed no visible signs of intoxication. Twelve tests came back positive, resulting in nine official reports and three on-the-spot fines. In two cases, police immediately confiscated the drivers’ licenses.
Elsewhere in the country
Shortly after 5pm on Saturday, police in Rollingen were alerted to a man sleeping behind the wheel of his car on Rue Belle-Vue, with the engine still running. When officers arrived, the man was uncooperative, and checks revealed that he was driving under the influence and already banned from driving. On the prosecutor’s orders, his vehicle was seized.
Later that evening, police were called to a gas station in Windhof, where an intoxicated driver had reportedly crashed his car into a wall. The driver was injured, and the alcohol test was positive. He was issued a temporary driving ban.
Between Colmar-Berg and Bissen, another motorist was stopped after driving erratically. Police managed to intervene before an accident occurred. The driver’s alcohol test was positive, and his license was confiscated.
In Limpertsberg, a driver parked his car on the sidewalk near the intersection of Boulevard de la Foire and Boulevard de la Porte Neuve. The unusual parking drew police attention, and once again, alcohol was involved. A temporary driving ban was issued.
Finally, at around 11.20pm on Route d'Arlon in Strassen, a collision occurred between a car and a bus. Officers noticed clear signs of intoxication from the car’s driver, who refused to take a breathalyzer test. A temporary driving ban was issued, and it later emerged that he no longer held a valid license. The vehicle was seized on the prosecutor’s orders, and a report was filed.
