With a deadline of January 2033 looming, drivers in Luxembourg are encouraged to proactively replace their old-format paper driving licences with the modern plastic version.

Drivers in Luxembourg holding the old-format pink paper driving licence are encouraged to arrange for an exchange, as the European Union will permit only the newer plastic-card version from 2033 onward.

While many residents have already switched to the plastic licence, approximately 62,000 drivers in the Grand Duchy still possess the paper document. Although these pink licences remain valid until the deadline, the clock is ticking for holders to make the change.

The transition is straightforward: individuals can voluntarily exchange their old licence for the new one by submitting a request to the National Road Traffic Authority (SNCA). This process has already been initiated by more than 6,000 people over the past two years.

The update was confirmed by Minister for Mobility Yuriko Backes in response to a parliamentary question from MP Françoise Kemp of the Christian Social People's Party (CSV).

Looking further ahead, a digital driving licence is also in the pipeline. The European Parliament has already accepted the corresponding proposal. Once published in the Official Journal, Luxembourg will have a four-year period to transpose the e-licence directive into national law.
