Contern municipal council faces a chaotic few weeks following the resignation of mayor Marion Zovilé-Braquet on Wednesday.
Just one of the original CSV-LSAP majority council members, Yves Loose of the CSV, remains in post following the mayor's resignation this week. Local members of the CSV criticised the LSAP's Stéphanie Ansay for not continuing her work after leaving the council of aldermen. Although Loose is yet to stand down, he is aware that his time as alderman is likely to end shortly.
"I'm aware of this and yet I will continue to do my duties," he said. "I was elected and took an oath. I don't shy away from work. I was working on the municipal budget before Madame Zovilé made her decision. Yesterday I spoke directly to the head of the financial service and told him that next week's meetings will be kept. I won't shy away from my responsibilities.
Loose added that he felt responsibility towards the residents of Contern and the municipal staff. The current coalition's budget will not be put to a vote in December. A three-way coalition made up of the DP, LSAP and the Greens is preparing to take over. As the first elected on the DP's list of candidates in 2023, Dali Zhu is being considered as the town's next mayor.
"It's no secret that we have been talking to the other parties recently and holding exploratory talks. Slowly we are reaching an agreement. We get on well and are confident we can put together a coalition. So the CSV's budget will not be voted on."
The new coalition will have a small majority of six seats and will work on an alternative budget so as not to waste time after the December vote. Zhu, who runs a number of gastronomic businesses, said the new coalition could be ready by All Saint's Day (1 November).
The CSV's Loose expressed surprise that none of the other parties had consulted him in terms of a new coalition in Contern.
