Xavier Bettel said on Thursday that he welcomed the announcement that Israel and Hamas had agreed to a peace plan, two years after the conflict escalation.
In an audio statement to RTL, Minister of Foreign Affairs Xavier Bettel said he was counting on the next few hours and days to bring peace to the region. Then he could "really breathe out", he stated.
Gaza is set to receive humanitarian aid over the weekend, and the Israeli hostages are to be released on Monday. The attacks are also due to cease as part of the agreement.
Bettel, who is currently on a work trip in Osaka, Japan, said it was possible to be optimistic that things were going in the right direction. However it was naturally important for the deal to go ahead even once the hostages are freed.
Bettel added that the individual details were unclear, such as the government of the Gaza Strip following the end of the war.
As unbelievable as it may sound, Bettel said, in his opinion US president Donald Trump was the only person who could have a distinct impact on the conflict. The minister also insisted that, for the Luxembourg government, the only real solution to the conflict would be a two-state solution. Luxembourg recently recognised the State of Palestine alongside other countries at the UN General Assembly.
