The iconic Merl park playground is set for a major revamp including a 900m² water play area, slides, and much more, all in the spirit of inclusivity, sustainability, and innovation.

The popular playground at Merl Park in Luxembourg City is about to undergo a complete transformation. On Tuesday, 26 August, Mayor Lydie Polfer and Alderman Maurice Bauer, responsible for the city’s parks, presented the final plans for the new play area. Construction work will officially begin on Monday, 15 September.

The new playground concept has been designed with a strong focus on inclusivity, sustainability, and innovation. The project promises a wide range of play experiences that combine fun, learning, and discovery.

Highlights include a 900m² water play area featuring ramps, fountains, pumps, sand areas, and barefoot-friendly surfaces. Designed without barriers, it welcomes visitors of all ages and abilities, encouraging both exploration and social interaction.

At the heart of the new playground will be two towers representing a hydroelectric power station and a wind turbine. Connected by accessible walkways and rope tunnels, they offer climbing challenges and sensory games while introducing children to renewable energy in an engaging way.

One of Merl Park’s main attractions in recent years has been its slides, which will remain in place, twisting and turning from various points on the climbing frame.

It will also feature climbing areas, suspended pathways, slides, and balance games, which will help children develop agility and coordination. The area will also include shaded play zones beneath elevated walkways. There is also a large oval swing structure, with a variety of swing types including inclusive models, fostering a sense of community and shared play.
